In the first step in the court application aimed at making the silicosis and TB class action settlement agreement an order of court, the Johannesburg High Court today issued a court order setting out the processes in terms of which members of the settling classes and any interested parties should be invited to show cause why the settlement should not be made an order of court.
World Bank president Dr Jim Yong Kim, currently on an official visit to South Africa, was hosted yesterday afternoon by the Minister of Health Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, Compensation Commissioner Dr Barry Kistnasamy, the Minerals Council South Africa, and the Occupational Lung Disease (OLD) Working Group and its six member mining companies: African Rainbow Minerals; AngloGold Ashanti; Anglo American SA; Gold Fields; Harmony and Sibanye-Stillwater.
A new website – www.SilicosisSettlement.co.za - and a Facebook page – www.facebook.com/silicosissettlement - have been launched to assist former mineworkers and their dependents who may be entitled to compensation if they worked at one of the six gold-mining companies that have made provisions for a trust to pay mineworkers who contracted silicosis and/or TB at work.

Johannesburg, 10 January 2018: Attorneys representing all appellants and all respondents involved in the appeal to the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) in respect of the silicosis and tuberculosis class action litigation have written to the Registrar of the SCA asking that the appeal proceedings be postponed sine die (until further notice).
