Progress in occupational lung disease process

Johannesburg, 30 January 2015 - As initially announced during the Mine Health and Safety Council Summit in November 2014, Anglo American South Africa, AngloGold Ashanti, Gold Fields, Harmony Gold and Sibanye Gold are continuing with a process to address issues relating to compensation and medical care for occupational lung disease in the gold mining industry in South Africa.

Further initial interactions have taken place with a range of stakeholders in the interim, including other mining companies, organised labour, senior government officials and legal representatives of claimants who have filed legal suits against the companies. The purpose of these interactions is to invite interested stakeholders to participate in a multi-stakeholder engagement.

The companies would like to achieve a comprehensive solution in a multi-stakeholder engagement which deals both with the legacy compensation issues and future legal frameworks and which is fair to employees and also ensures the future sustainability of companies in the industry.
